Frequently asked questions

Is my commute short enough to bike?

Commute Sum treats daily round trips of up to 35 km (about 22 miles) as bikeable, and up to 50 km (about 31 miles) with an e-bike. For those commutes it estimates what you would save on fuel, maintenance and vehicle costs by biking some or all of the time.

How long does it take for a bike to pay for itself?

Pick a budget, from about 200 dollars for a used bike to 4,500 dollars for a new electric cargo bike. Commute Sum divides it by what you save each day to show when the bike has paid for itself.

How is the yearly cost of my commute calculated?

Commute Sum takes your daily round-trip distance and how often you commute, and adds it up over a year. It then adds fuel or electricity (from your vehicle's consumption and your energy price), maintenance such as tires, brakes and oil spread over the distance driven, and fixed monthly costs such as a car loan, insurance, parking or a transit pass.

Is it free? Where is my data stored?

It is free and needs no account. Your answers are saved in your browser so you can come back later. Anonymous usage data is sent to help improve the tool: street addresses are removed and locations are rounded to about 10 km.

How much time do I spend commuting per year?

Your daily commute time is added up over the year. If you enter your home and work addresses, travel times come from Google Maps, including rush-hour traffic for drivers.
